The Tampa Metro Civitan Club (and its forerunner, the Tampa Civitan Club) first awarded the Outstanding Citizen of the Year Award in 1927. The award is intended to recognize an outstanding member of the community who has given of her/his time and talent and who has devoted much energy to make the community better. Recipients over the years have given of themselves over extended periods of time and have asked nothing in return. They have worked tirelessly with a primary purpose: the betterment of the Tampa community. The award recipients are selected by Selection Committee in a secret balloting process and the recipient is announced at the Governor’s Luncheon at the Florida State Fair. The award was not presented in 1930 and 1938 when the recipient’s name was accidentally “leaked” before the luncheon and in 2021 when the Governor’s Luncheon was not held due to the COVID pandemic.
